DeviantART changed a lot recently. I think I pretty much lost track of what new features there are now, and how to use it. I am convinced it's not an issue of age, it must actually be that older folks like me have less time to fiddle with the site settings to see what everything does. *nods* CURSE YOU!
Miku by Cardinal4
Miku
Hatsune Miku, Nendroid version.

New tool, new style. My first practice in openCanvas.

Photo Reference: I'll Sing You A Love Song!
Done in openCanvas, touched up in Photoshop.

I felt like Photoshop's brush engine wasn't good enough, so I was looking for alternatives that had blending brushes.

OpenCanvas was the least cluttered. Surprisingly, it had Photoshop necessities like Layer Blend Mode, Clipping, and Alpha Lock were present. I miss Layer Lock though, all that accidental misclicks onto other layers ;). Main problem right now is still keyboard shortcuts though, lol, still not familiar.

While doing the hair I was like "arghhhh I wanna go back Photoshop and do cel shaded-ish again". Confused, i started randomly spamming strokes but the effect wasn't too bad. Better than if I had done cel shading, in part due to the weird way the hair was drawn.

I'm using Photoshop to paint my drawings in an anime style, but sometimes I wonder if Photoshop brushes are limiting my ability to paint?

For instance, in OpenCanvas or SAI, some of the watercolor brushes can sample the color on the canvas, on top of the color you selected for your brush. For instance, imagine you painted a solid red spot on your canvas. Now, you use the watercolor brush with green. When you paint on a blank spot, green is applied, but if you paint onto the red spot, the color smudges, you get a dirty brownish color instead. The mixing of the colors makes for a much realistic brush, closer to what you'd see in real life.

But in Photoshop, there is no such mixing. I'm getting by with using opacity, the eyedropper, and the smudge tool.

So my question is, are they Photoshop brushes that can achieve the same realistic color mix effect? They should be non-laggy, as everytime I choose a fancy brush like the Bristled brush or whatever, every stroke of the brush hangs my computer for a few seconds.

And ... is it possible that certain painting styles are only achievable in non-Photoshop programs, or is Photoshop capable of anything? Then again, is it more like "Photoshop could do it, but it's not practicable"?

Self-taught artist here!

I like to draw art, because a good piece of art has a certain kind of mysticism to it. You know how a slightly misdrawn stroke can have a huge impact on the personality of a character? How random, squiggles orientated in different directions can become a picture of a barn in the countryside? It is intriguing how everything comes together because of deliberate lines placed onto a canvas.

Favourite Styles of Art
Low Poly 3D Cartoon - Clean mesh, thrifty vertex placement and not more than a color map.

Anime Digital Art - Proportioned character line art. Open to any colouring style.

Cartoony Vector Art - Heavily lined with simple shapes and color shades.

Environment Sketch - Broad yet detailed. Simple fine strokes that either range from the orderly urban perspective sketches, or the messy and organic landscape sketches

Tools
Wacom Bamboo - Awesome entry-level tablet.
Photoshop - Out of habit and is an industry standard.
openCanvas - Has a nicer brush engine for painting.
Blender - 3D modelling and animation tool
